What VWAP and Deviation Bands Actually Tell You
VWAP, the Volume Weighted Average Price, represents the average price of an instrument weighted by the volume traded at each level. Institutions rely on it as a benchmark for fair value, which is why prices often react around it.
When price trades near VWAP, it is trading near the period's volume-weighted consensus. When it pulls far away, something is stretched.
The standard deviation bands measure that stretch. They are calculated from the volume-weighted dispersion of price around VWAP, not from a fixed pip distance, so the bands widen and contract with real market conditions.
That makes them far more honest than simple fixed-offset bands that ignore how the market is actually moving.
Volume-Weighted Bands, Not Fixed-Distance Lines
This is where many free versions cut corners. KT VWAP with Standard Deviation Bands builds each band from a true volume-weighted standard deviation around VWAP, with three fully configurable levels:
- Band 1 at 1.0 standard deviation marks the normal-value boundary, where the price spends most of its time.
- Band 2 at 2.0 standard deviations flags genuinely extended conditions.
- Band 3 at 3.0 standard deviations highlights rare, far-stretched moves.
Band 1 and Band 2 are shown by default, and Band 3 is available whenever you want to track the extremes. Every multiplier, color, width, and line style is adjustable, so the indicator matches the way you read a chart.
Inputs
Flexible Reset Modes for Any Trading Style
VWAP only means something relative to where it is calculated, so this indicator gives you full control over the reset boundary. You can anchor the calculation to whatever rhythm your strategy follows:
- Daily reset for intraday traders who treat each session fresh.
- Weekly reset for swing traders working a multi-day view.
- Monthly reset for position traders tracking longer fair value.
- Custom session reset for traders who only care about specific hours, with overnight sessions fully supported.
Whichever mode you choose, the bands reset right along with VWAP, so the dispersion always reflects the current period only.
Optional New York 5 PM Rollover
For traders who treat the New York 17:00 close as the true start of the trading day, the daily reset can be aligned to that rollover instead of the broker's server midnight.
A simple offset input lets you map your broker's server time to New York time, so the daily VWAP reflects the institutional trading day rather than an arbitrary clock boundary. It is a small detail that matters a great deal if you trade FX or metals around the New York close.
Confirmed Mean-Reversion Alerts
A band touch on its own means very little, because price can ride an outer band for a long time in a strong trend. KT VWAP with Standard Deviation Bands solves this with an alert engine that waits for confirmation before it speaks.
A signal only fires after a two-stage sequence completes. First, price pierces beyond your chosen outer band. Then, on a later candle, the price closes back inside that band, and the confirming candle must close in the direction of the reversion.
Only then does the alert trigger. This filters out the noise of price simply tagging a band and keeps you focused on moves that have actually started turning back toward fair value.
You can route these alerts through pop-up, push notification, or email, choose whether they trigger from the 2-sigma or 3-sigma band, and limit them to one alert per candle to avoid repeats.
Clean Visuals and Reference Levels
The indicator is built to keep your chart readable rather than cluttered. You can show or hide each band pair independently, break the lines cleanly at every reset so periods never connect with a misleading diagonal, and optionally display the previous completed period's VWAP and bands as horizontal reference levels.
The result is a chart that shows exactly what you need and nothing you do not.
Honest Notes on Volume and Data
VWAP is only as good as the volume data behind it. On most spot Forex symbols, tick volume is more reliably available than real exchange volume, so the indicator defaults to tick volume and automatically falls back to it if real volume is selected but unavailable.
Custom session times and the New York rollover both use your broker's server time, so it is worth confirming your offset once when you set things up. This is a charting and context tool; it does not place trades or predict direction.
